After a week of uncertainty, District 6 Representative Charlie Wilson announced late Friday afternoon that he will support the $940 billion Health Care bill which Congress will vote on Sunday. It is another odd decision made by a man who claims to represent the interests of Eastern Ohio residents.

“Charlie voted for something that the majority of his constituents are against,” says Jim Renner, the democrat from North Benton who faces Wilson in the May 4th primary. “Once again, he’s going to do what Charlie wants to do, not what residents of District 6 want him to do.”

Renner believes the current Health Care bill is the product of special interest groups and worries about the impact this bill will have on members of his community, who are already hard-pressed due to recent economic troubles.

“We’re all going to be paying more in taxes,” says Renner. “This is bad for everybody. And we’re not likely to see any benefit for four years.”

Renner is concerned, too, with everything we don’t yet know about this bill.

“Nobody has any idea what’s really in this bill, including Charlie,” he says. “We should have at least read it first.”

I attended a town meeting last night in Wellsville and got to watch the interactions of residents concerned about the future of their town, rolling their sleeves up to make it a better place to live and visit.

I saw an article about the meeting in the paper and thought it would be a good way to learn about the area. I didn’t go to campaign, just to listen. And what I heard were caring people with a “we can do” attitude solving their own problems and building their own future. It was America the way it should be .

Judging by what I saw and heard, this community is on the right track. They are not waiting for change to happen–they’re initiating it. That’s good old American ingenuity and toughness.

I believe anyone  seeking public office today should make shoring up family values a major priority. Families are the roots of any community. Strong values make strong communities and strong communities are what keep America on track.
